The app is iShoot by Ethan Nicholas. It’s a fairly straightforward artillery combat game that many of you will likely have played on different platforms over the years. My two older sons spent a fair amount of time this weekend playing iShoot so I can understand why it’s in the #1 position. I actually need tp personally thank Ethan for dethroning iFart from the #1 Paid position. He’s done us all a favor.

The first we heard of this change was from Sam Magdalein, creator of Pull My Finger. Earlier this month, he received a call from an Apple representative indicating that a whole new genre of apps would be approved, including Magdalein’s own app which was initially rejected back in September. His rejection letter indicated that Apple found his app to be of limited utility.

This is an approach I am quite pleased with as it has tremendous strengths in regards to expressing the ‘more than a phone’ capabilities of the device. Application distribution on iPhone is unmatched, and now with more than 10,000 apps downloaded more than 300 million times (on millions and millions of devices), it’s hard to argue with Apple’s marketing taglines in its new iPhone TV commercials – “Solving life’s dilemmas, one app at a time” and “This is when you realize, this is going to change everything.”

You can read more about the project in my blog entry, Obama ‘08 for iPhone. My first contact with the campaign took place on August 19th. I had the opportunity to visit the campaign headquarters on September 6th to finalize project details with Scott Goodstein, Director of External Online, the internal champion for the project. 32 days after the application launch on November 4th, Senator Obama (now President-Elect Obama) was elected as the next President of the United States, to be sworn in 77 days later on January 20th.

Today marks the end of Obama ‘08 for iPhone as the application has been marked for removal from the App Store. The application had a lifespan of just 61 days, 32 of those pre-election, the period of time that really mattered. Unlike the vast majority of iPhone applications available in the App Store, Obama ‘08 was tied to specific time-based goal – supporting the election of Senator Obama. It had a defined objective with a clear timeframe.

This was a great project, and I will be sad to see it come to an end, but by all measures this application was a tremendous success for the campaign, in terms of downloads, calls made, and media attention. Many of the concepts will live on, and I hope to see the future President Obama look to mobile technology as a means to better connect with the citizens of the United States. I also fully expect to see the promulgation of mobile applications for diverse causes and brands. It’s a proven model. We’re at the beginning of something exciting here.

The number of currently available applications is just shy of 10,000 due to discontinued apps and a few that have been pulled by Apple (e.g. trademark disputes, terms of service violations, etc.). AppSherpa believes that it will only be a few more days until there are 10,000 iPhone applications available for sale on the US App Store. Total international App Store numbers are not being tracked by anyone outside of Apple, as far as I can tell.
